Join us for ‘Art on the Beach’ on Sunday 17th August!
Toby Goodyer, our talented volunteer and art session lead, is planning to sketch a giant chalk drawing of Brighton’s iconic West Pier on the seafront area called The Deck in front of Brighton sailing club for seafront goers to enjoy. Toby runs the art sessions at the Clock Tower Sanctuary, one of the many afternoon activities aimed at building self-esteem, confidence and trust in the clients who use the day centre. He says ‘I have been a volunteer at CTS for about a year. The staff and volunteers at the centre work hard to provide a valuable resource to the community. It provides a secure environment that will provide respite for those who need it.’
‘My background is in art and teaching, and I wondered how I might utilise these skills to benefit others. A friend told me about CTS and I started as a volunteer. The intention being to facilitate drawing for those who want it, so clients can take It in their own direction. Just relax and enjoy making art without the pressure of any kind of brief while in a safe and comfortable environment.’
Bella, 20 (name has been changed) said: “I don’t know if the staff and volunteers at CTS who run the activities know how much they do for my loneliness and mental health, but it makes a huge difference.”
Toby will do the sketch over the morning on Saturday 17th August. In the afternoon he will run some sample art sessions for the public to experience what is offered to the young people using the centre with the event finishing at 3pm. He says,’ The idea of this event is to capture something unique to the Brighton and Hove seafront, while raising the profile of the great work undertaken by the Clock Tower Sanctuary. Over the morning, I will attempt to create a large-scale pavement drawing of the West Pier, in all its broken glory.’
