Helping in the day centre
Volunteers are a vital part of The Clock Tower Sanctuary team. They help with the day-to-day running of the day centre and provide support and a friendly welcome to the young people experiencing homelessness who come here.
If you volunteer with us you’ll be working directly with the young people who use our service. You’ll spend time getting to know them, chatting and offering them support. You’ll also help with things like putting away food donations, making up care packages and popping out to get fresh food for meals.
We’ll give you lots of training and backup so that you feel well-prepared for the role. You’ll learn transferable skills and gain experience that can open up lots of career opportunities. We’ll provide introductory training modules and on-going opportunities for learning and development. We have morning and afternoon check ins and check outs, bi-monthly supervisions, volunteer meetings and socials so you’ll feel well-supported and part of a team.
Volunteering in the day centre can be challenging, as many of our clients are coping with some very difficult situations, but the impact you’ll have on building their confidence and helping them set goals for their future is really rewarding.
What we look for in volunteers
We welcome people of all ages who can:
- be empathetic to the needs of young people experiencing homelessness
- have effective communication and interpersonal skills
- maintain safe personal boundaries and confidentiality
- work as a team and support colleagues
- commit to one shift a week (10am-3pm), ideally for a minimum of six months.
The young people we work with need stability and consistency, so we look for volunteers who can make a regular commitment. You don’t need to have experience working with young people.
For more information on what it’s like to volunteer in the day-centre, you can read our Volunteer Welcome Pack here.

"I really look forward to helping out on my Friday shift, it's my favourite part of the week. To see our clients grow and to celebrate their achievements with them is incredible. I'm proud to be part of the support and guidance The Clock Tower Sanctuary provides."
Or have you got a few hours to spare?
We’re always in need of willing helpers for:
- street collections and fundraising events
- cheering on our runners in the Brighton Marathon and other events
- presenting to school assemblies and work places
- picking up donations from community groups
We would love to hear from you if you can spare a few hours or your company encourages you to volunteer!
